Apak Making a Difference in its Operating Communities

Here at Apak Group, we have a distinctive and very personal approach to ensuring we're playing an active role in supporting good causes within the communities in our local areas; this includes Bristol, Newbury in Berkshire and Alpharetta, Georgia in the USA.

Rather than supporting purely ‘corporate’ causes, Apak challenged its team to support, inspire and empower employees into making a difference in their local communities through fundraising and volunteering. In some cases, the Apak Charity Team (ACT) has been able to match the value of exceptional fundraising efforts.

The programme is operated by ACT, which was formed late in 2016 and is a team that consists of representatives from across the business, including the Executive Board with a goal to try and ‘make a difference.’

Over the last year, there can be no doubt that the team has achieved its goal.

  • 14 challenges were undertaken
  • 14 organised events took place
  • 14 good causes were supported
  • £31,015 was donated to good causes through fundraising and company contribution

Along with events such as coffee mornings and charity quizzes, some of the more unusual activities included; Bring Your Dog to Work Day, an ongoing Tuck Shop, a Mud Bath 10K run and the Sodbury Slog run, while in the USA a Taco Eating competition stands out!

Good causes benefitting from the team’s efforts included: The Alzheimer Society, Baggator (a project for young people in Bristol), Southmead Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Brain Tumour Charity, Cancer Research, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Kingsgate Park (community supported park in Yate), Movember Foundation, Myeloma UK, Royal British Legion, Salvation Army, Solihull Mind, Ahimsa House (USA) and the University of the West of England (UWE) Bursary (Tony Papadopoulos Foundation).

The level of team engagement and funds raised in 2018 exceeded those targeted by the Apak Charity team as Nikki Fitzell who has been part of ACT from the outset reflects;

“We consciously aim to support causes which appeal, and are meaningful, to individuals across the whole organisation. Our fundraising events encourage very broad participation through fundraising, donations and volunteering opportunities. Getting as many people involved is all part of the journey and, as well as having a positive impact and seeing the difference we can make to the charities we support, we get to have a lot of fun along the way!”

We are in the process of selecting a local charity to partner with during 2019 and are very much looking forward to finding out the many different ways we can help them moving forward.
