“I would be given real-world experience … in the kind of professional environment I aspired to after university – not something that comes up often with placement jobs.”
My role as Product Manager draws widely on my technical and people management experience; I use my knowledge and experience working within Apak Group to guide the direction of our product lines. My current responsibilities include supporting key strategic decisions on our products, enforcing consistency and quality across all products, centralizing product knowledge so that it can be accessed and presented in useful ways to different consumers.
I studied Computer Science at the University of the West of England; during my first two years at university my stand out subject was Java Programming and I could really see myself developing a career in this field. So when I looked at placement opportunities and saw the job advertised at Apak I felt it was exactly what I was after. I would be given a real-world experience of working in a Java development team in the kind of professional environment I aspired to after university – not something that comes up often with placement jobs. My placement was very successful both professionally and educationally. I worked on live projects of varying size and complexity, expanded my knowledge, and received great support from some brilliant people along the way. It didn’t take long for me to become a valuable and productive team member.
From my placement, I was given the opportunity to work alongside my studies in my final year of university and from here I joined the company full time as an Analyst Programmer. I continued to progress through the company and my ambition and professional development was supported throughout the process.
The company has a fantastic mix of hard work and fun that keeps morale high and makes for an excellent work environment. There is a real emphasis on teamwork too especially when it comes to problem-solving.
